Update: Hieroglyphic Being & Demdike Stare

Resident Adviser just interviewed Hieroglyphic Being on their weekly "Exchange" podcast. If your interested check it out here.

"Hieroglyphic Being sounds like no one else. While the Chicago DJ/producer often cites the mentorship of Adonis and the memory of seeing Ron Hardy DJ as key influences on his career, the abstract, noisy dance music that he makes is quite clearly his own. Since 2008, the artist born Jamal Moss has released under the Hieroglyphic Being name in earnest and he's racked up an enormous discography in the process, one that has largely come through his own record label, Mathematics. Moss uses the imprint as a platform to also showcase largely unknown artists to the world. Its aim is to give young producers a leg up without taking a cut from publishing, a rarity in the music business. I spoke to Moss in Poland last month at the Unsound Festival as he prepared for his debut performance with Ital as part of RA's Live Exchange series. We talked about his music, his label and his record bag, which, believe it or not, features the likes of Simply Red."

Additionally last weeks Exchange podcast featured another Surefire artist, Demdike Stare. Both podcasts are pretty great, you can listen to the interview Demdike Stare here

"Demdike Stare don't have a love affair with the occult, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell that by listening to their music. Their dark, droning music has often been likened to the sort of thing you'd hear soundtracking a cult horror movie. But despite the sinister nature of the project, Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, the duo behind Demdike Stare, are just about the nicest boys from Manchester you could ever hope to talk to. Meet them in person, and you'll soon realize that they're simply cratediggers obsessed with those aforementioned soundtracks. We talked to the duo in Poland at this year's Unsound Festival as part of our RA Live Exchange series and, among other things, found out how they almost bankrupted their record label, Modern Love, a few years ago."

Jon Convex: Idoru Available to Stream Now

The new Jon Convex album, Idoru, is now available to stream on FACT magazine for one week only.

From FACT: "Idoru finds Convex in sterling form, touching on Basic Channel dub-techno, pillow-talk electro and warped, rattling underground house, all bound together by allusions to a faded female subject in the album’s track titles – think the kind of unspoken narrative that exists in an album like Dopplereffekt’s Gesamtkunstwerk."

Read an in-depth interview with the man himself while you preview the album.

Kuedo's Work, Live & Sleep in Collapsing Space arrives

Kuedo's latest single has arrived on Planet Mu today.

"'Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space' starts with huge symphonic synths, half-speed kicks, trap style hi-hats rushes and flammed 808 snares, slowly building up with giant whooshes of gaseous noise before breaking out into an intense trancey moroderesque synth that totally fills the track, making it sound absolutely vast and a little bit frightening, running it through effects to give it an aggressive, spacey rush that takes your breath away."

Remixes are also included by Laurel Halo and Claude Speed featuring. Jivraj Singh

XI - Joy/Fear out NOW!!

The new "Joy/Fear EP" from XI on New Kanada was released today

From Boomkat:

"Certified canuck, XI complements New Kanada's diverse roster with three tracks of swinging, shuffling, stepping House/Bass. With 'Joy/Fear' he's on a mad one full of pitch-bent synthlines and samples swerving between 4/4 House, loping dubstep and junglist tussles in unique style. The melodies and scuffed groove of 'Nightlif' are much friendlier and a smart departure from his ravier gear, and then there's the bubbling, aquatic skip and swing of 'Antikythera'."

The EP is available exclusively on Beatport for 2 weeks! Grab your copy here!. Vinyl to follow shortly.

Ital Tek mix for Solid Steel Radio

The latest installment of Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio featured a mix by Ital Tek.

"Ital Tek supplies the guest mix this week and he's crafted a cyber-sonic creation of Footwork inspired selections and mutant bass workouts with tracks from the likes of Machinedrum, Evian Christ, ASAP Rocky and Lone, plus plenty of released and unreleased productions from the man himself. "

XI's new project Ambalance

Surefire artist XI collaborates with Skeleton Bone on a new project entitled Ambalance, their debut EP "Cokewave" was released this week on Bandcamp as PWYC.

"From the depths of Toronto's underground music culture comes Ambalance, a decidedly left-field endeavor from bass music far-seer XI and Underdog Toronto nightlife royalty Skeleton Bone. Combining beautiful synth scoring, with brain-dance throwback rhythm programming and ample doses of melancholy. Ambalance is an experience in and of itself."

Slugabed 'Time Team' + Free Download

Slugabed's 'Time Team' is a concise documentation of Greg Feldwick's computational experiments analysing the directionality of hexagonal crystals. Released on Ninja Tune on 7 May (15 May in N.America), Slugabed's music is suffused with a unique mix of humour, next level production, dancefloor smarts and melancholic emotion.

Asked to explain 'Time Team', Feldwick responds that "it's to do with deep feelings about mostly inexpressible things". It is indeed an album full of feeling, warmth and humour, a remarkable feat for a record composed mainly on synthesisers and drum machines.

XI Podcast for Frite Nite + Massive Tour Announcement

Feature and US tour dates over at Frite Nite

"Simply put, XI is a personal favorite of ours here at Frite Nite. 2011 brought a bounty of fruitful endeavors for the Toronto native also known as Christian Anderson. Prior to his recent relocation to the brimming music scene that is Berlin, XI shared a number of releases that covered the classiest sides of damn near every style and tempo we hold dear. From his “Gamma Rain / Medicate” 12″ on Orca, to his spot-on remix of Sepalcure’s timeless “Love Pressure” on Hotflush, all the way back to the stand-out track “Whiteout” on our own Surreal Estate compilation, the young man stays busy. The hot streak continues in 2012, with his third 12″ for Orca (his full-time label home) entitled “Squeeze / Immunity”, which has already become a staple in a few of our crates. Needless to say, we are thrilled to have him as our distinguished guest for the 17th edition of the FTNT podcast series."

Rustie's 'Glass Swords' First Album Award

"If Russell "Rustie" Whyte was anything like his music, interviewing him would be a tough gig. He'd be bouncing off the walls, screaming his answers in your face and having to take Ritalin to calm down whenever you asked a question. Then, when you were done, he'd swallow your dictaphone and regurgitate it across the desk.

Rustie's debut album Glass Swords, you see, is a playful riot of a record, a neon tapestry of sonic thrills that incorporates 80s pop, happy hardcore, the Seinfeld theme, soft rock and hip-hop – often all at the same time. It refuses to sit still for more than a nanosecond and has been hailed by several critics as being at the vanguard of a new wave of "maximalism" in electronic music..."

We're extremely proud to say that Rustie has won the Guardian's 'First Album Award' for his stunning debut LP 'Glass Swords'. Voted for by critics including Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire and Gold Panda. Check the full story and interview here in today's Guardian.

Africa Hitech interview

"This year saw the collaboration of two luminaries in the electronic and dance music world. Mark Pritchard has a long history in a wealth of projects, from Global Communication and Troubleman to his recent Harmonic 313 guise for Warp Records. Steve Spacek formed the trio Spacek with Ed Spacek and Morgan Spacek (now Morgan Zarate on Hyperdub) before moving on to solo releases under his own name such as Spaceshift, which featured J Dilla on one song. After both relocated to Australia and found themselves living near each other, they embarked on an exploration of shared themes and beats. The result was Africa Hitech and 2011′s 93 Million Miles, featuring the breakout “Out In The Streets” single. While touring the U.S. they found time to chat with LWE about their history, influences, working together, and what the future holds."

Monolake (live) with support from Peverelist

"On the first evening of March, Robert Henke will be bringing his Ghosts in Surround Tour to Room One as part of a multi dimensional, immersive audio and visual experience. The tour comes as Henke releases ‘Ghosts’, the 9th studio album to be released under the Monolake moniker, which is set for release on 27th February through his own Imbalance Computer Music label. The entirety of the album was composed in Ableton Live, a digital audio workstation that Henke, a true advocate of the possibilities of technology, himself helped develop.

The Bristol based Punch Drunk Records boss, Peverelist, has been called upon to provide DJ support - his broken blend of sounds echo the expanse of Monolake’s own production palette - alongside our resident Craig Richards, who’s a much charted lover of Henke’s level of inventiveness and progression through his regular Nothing Special pursuits. This event will allow Richards to explore the more experimental side of his record collection, as he ably segues from performance to dancefloor and vice versa."
