Tikiman + Scion

(performing songs from Rhythm & Sound’s classic Showcase album)

Take a snapshot of electronic music in the late 1990s. Zoom in on Berlin, Germany. A small nucleus of producers are releasing records on now legendary labels such as Maurizio, Basic Channel, Burial Mix and Chain Reaction.

These records were hugely influential, and helped to redefine and refine techno music . Instantly recognisable, most of these productions are now indelibly written into electronic music legend, and still regularly played by DJs across the globe more than 15 years later.

Among the countless projects and releases to come from this small pool of talent and creativity, the collaboration between Rhythm and Sound (aka Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald) and reggae vocalist Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman) has left perhaps the most enduring legacy of all. The studio sessions led to a series of five 10” singles on the Burial Mix label, which were later compiled together with five ‘versions’ into the Showcase album. These songs, combining the warmth and humanity of Tikiman’s vocals with the sparse, layered atmospherics of Ernestus and Von Oswald’s sound, served to (re)introduce reggae to many die-hard techno fans, and vice versa. Showcase is now firmly entrenched in music history, and rightly regarded as one of the defining records of its time.

Although Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald chose not to play these songs live, they gave their blessing to Scion to build a set from their original tracks and perform these and other songs live with Tikiman to recreate the magic of this very special album. Scion are René Löwe (aka Vainqueuer) and Peter Kuschnereit (aka Substance / DJ Pete), and have been an integral part of the Berlin techno scene for almost two decades. In 1995 Basic Channel launched the Chain Reaction label with Scion’s first release 'Emerge' and later invited Scion to 'Arrange And Process Basic Channel Tracks' for a release of that name on the Tresor label.

Having performed this breathtaking live show at Scuba’s Sub:stance club night in Berghain, we’re delighted that they have agreed to let us represent this exciting project for festival and club bookings throughout the world.

For certain shows, it is also possible to add Mark Ernestus (Rhythm & Sound) to the billing, to perform a seperate DJ show with Tikiman vocals on the same night.
